Occasional food premises and non-registration

Registration under the Food Hygiene Regulations is not usually necessary when:

  • Your premises are used only occasionally eg a school fair or a non-profit organisation’s occasional fund raising events
  • You do not sell to the public, eg a works canteen, club, school or rest home. An environmental health officer may still inspect your premises and charge an inspection fee – in this case a ‘Health Inspection Certificate’ will be issued
  • Trading at a market in certain cases.

If your operation falls within one of these categories you must still comply with the safe food handling and storage requirements of the Food Hygiene Regulations.
