Tamahere community opts for top-end facilities at recreation reserve

12 October 2017

The Tamahere community has shown it wants to play its part in leaving the best legacy possible at Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza.

Waikato District Council sent consultation documents to Tamahere Ward ratepayers in July asking them if they were prepared to pay an estimated $38 per year for 15 years to ensure a high quality of facilities at the reserve.

Of the 690 respondents, 443 (64%) said they were, while 244 (35%) supported a basic level of facilities. The balance of respondents did not indicate a preference.

The positive response to an enhanced level of service package of facilities for the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza means it would include a better and bigger playground, a more exciting skatepark, a fitness trail looping the reserve, a basketball half-court and higher specification walkways and park furniture.

The Tamahere Community Committee and Tamahere Ward Councillor Aksel Bech have made no secret in the fact that they supported the enhanced level of service package.

“I just thought it was important that we leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy at the reserve,” said Clr Bech.

“The community of today and the future deserve a serious level of awesomeness.  I’m pleased that the majority of respondents to the consultation agree with us, and are prepared to pay an additional targeted rate to make it happen.”

Waikato District Council Programme Delivery Manager Jacki Remihana said it was crucial to receive the feedback from the community.

“They have given us direction and we are looking forward to delivering a fantastic open space that the community can be proud of.”

The Tamahere Community Committee has been extensively involved in the initial concept and design process.

Council will now continue to engage with the committee to establish a detailed plan for the reserve incorporating the result of the consultation.

As work progresses, updates will be provided at the Tamahere Community Committee meetings, held on the first Monday of each month at 7.30pm at the Tamahere Community Centre.
