Due to a recent change in legislation, it is now up to local councils to decide if shops can open on Easter Sunday.
Waikato District Council is proposing to adopt an Easter Trading Policy, which will allow shops within our district boundary to open on Easter Sunday (except for any off-licence premises selling alcohol).
Between 14 December 2016 and 17 February 2017 we sought feedback from the public on a proposed policy. During the consultation period we received 1268 submissions, of which 656 were in support of the proposed policy. 610 were against it and 2 did not specify.
On 15 March 2017 the Policy and Regulatory Committee heard and considered submissions and has recommended that the policy is adopted at the full council meeting on April 10.
