Waikato District Council is committed to the continued improvement of the health of the awa alongside our partners. This includes programmed improvements and upgrades to all of our wastewater assets.
Our consent to operate the wastewater treatment plant in Meremere has not lapsed. An application has been lodged with Waikato Regional Council for the continued operation of the plant.
We are aware of the issues with the Meremere plant, including the recent abatement notice issued by Waikato Regional Council. The abatement notice refers to solids, which in this case means algae. There are no current health concerns with the Meremere plant or its discharge and the discharge is tested weekly.
We are currently designing an improvement to this system with Watercare. We met on Friday 13 December with local iwi and community members to discuss these matters.
