2021 Matariki competition

2018 matariki winner

Showcase your artistic skills with Waikato District Libraries Matariki competition!

All you need to do is design a bookmark or write a poem about Matariki (Maaori New Year) and you could win.

A $100 gift voucher will be awarded to the winner of each age group category. There will also be a supreme winner chosen and they will receive an additional $50 gift voucher and trophy.

“We also have a fabulous prize this year where one lucky school will win $300 worth of books,” says Library Programme & Outreach Specialist, Cheryl Maskell. “Matariki is such a special time of year and we would love you to celebrate with us.”

Matariki is the Maaori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades, which rises in late May or early June in the Eastern sky. For many Maaori, it signals the start of a new year and is a time of sharing and festivity.

Competition entries open Monday 14 June and close Friday 9 July at 5pm.

Entry forms can be download here, or picked up from our libraries or offices. This year entries are accepted both online or by dropping into your local Waikato District library.

Entries are accepted in both Te Reo and English. The age categories are 5-9 years old, 10-15 years old, and 16 years and over.

Competition details can be found here.
