As we enter the 2025 local election period, I want to encourage everyone in the Waikato district to get involved. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of your community. Whether it’s the roads you drive on, the water you drink, or the parks your kids play in, local government decisions affect your everyday life and now is the time to engage.
At the last local election, only around 32% of eligible voters in our district had their say. We can do better. Voting is your chance to influence the direction of your town, your rohe and your community's future. It’s about making sure your voice is counted.
But what does it actually mean to be an elected member?
In the Waikato district, you elect community board members, councillors and a Mayor. Each plays an important role in representing your views and making decisions on your behalf. Community board members work closely with their local areas, advocating for local needs and community projects. Councillors represent larger wards, while also taking a district-wide view when they vote on key issues like budgets, policies, and infrastructure investment. The Mayor leads the council and provides a strong voice for the whole district. Together, they shape our collective future.
As Chief Operating Officer, I oversee the delivery of Council’s day-to-day operations and ensure our team continues to deliver for you, no matter the political cycle. Our team is already working on the direction set in the 2025–2034 Long Term Plan, including investment in core infrastructure, delivery of roading maintenance, the upkeep of parks and reserves, continued support for our libraries and community facilities and the establishment of IAWAI Flowing Waters – our new water services entity.
But local democracy is about more than services. It is about your voice and your vision for this place we all call home.
So please get involved and be part of the conversation. Whether you’re thinking of standing as a candidate or casting your vote, your involvement matters.
