After public consultation, the date for a monthly recycling drop-off service for the Te Aakau community has been brought forward by two years, starting next month in August.
The monthly drop-off service will be held on the third Saturday every month at Te Aakau Community Hall - more information about the service can be found here.
The first two years of the service will be funded by the Waste Minimisation Fund, after that Te Aakau residents will see a targeted rate in their rates invoices that will continue to fund the service.
This is the first time residents of Te Aakau and surrounding areas will have a recycling drop-off service.
Waikato District Council Deputy Service Delivery GM Anthony Averill said bringing the date forward by two years was testament to the community and their commitment to waste minimisation.
“This service is something this community really wants and has advocated for. We’re delighted to bring it forward by two years. This shows that when council and the community work together, great things can happen.
“Waikato District Council is committed to waste minimisation and to helping our communities to do this. The first service starts on Saturday, 16 August, and we’re looking forward to seeing our residents there,” Averill said.
What can I recycle?
Glass
Glass needs to be clean and separated from the rest of the recycling. Lids and tops need to be removed. Please ensure the containers you bring glass in aren’t too heavy – our drivers need to lift them safely
Plastics
Household plastic 1, 2 and 5 needs to be together and needs to be clean and no lids
Cardboard
Cardboard needs to be flattened and clean
Metal
Household metal food tins and drink cans need to be clean and no lids.
When and where?
- The monthly drop-offs will be between 8:30am and 12:30pm on the third Saturday of each month, starting on 16 August 2025.
- The location will be Te Aakau Hall carpark (next to the school).
What if I miss a service?
There are two options
- You can bring your recycling to the next drop-off. There is no limit to how much you can bring.
- You can take it to a transfer station, your closest one that takes recycling is the Huntly Green Gorilla at 93 McVie Road (Huntly).
