Legendary chip shop up for lease

Outdoor takeaway stand with chalkboard menus listing various foods, like burgers and chips. A fridge with drinks is visible inside. Sign says "Jo's Takeaway, Closed at 7." Casual, inviting vibe.

Jo’s Takeaways at Papahua Recreation Reserve in Raglan has been the holy grail of chip shops for locals, visitors' and fish ‘n’ chip connoisseurs alike.

Run by Jo Thompson for 19 years, the store has been a staple for the Raglan community and visitors, until earlier this year, when Jo and Andy reluctantly decided to move on from the business.

Locals were sad to see her go and Waikato District Council hopes to continue her legacy by finding someone to fill the now vacant shop and bring the building back to life.

Situated on Marine Parade, in the field near the campground, playgrounds, and public toilets – this prime spot is the perfect location for a year-round business.

While not the tidiest, the 110m2 building has the basics needed to run a takeaway with recent work being completed for weather-proofing and to improve the exterior.

The successful lessee will be able to fit out the building to meet their needs and be responsible for the rent, set at a market rate, and all applicable outgoing costs.

So, whether it is a chip shop, tuck shop, or the ever-reliable dairy, Council are keen to hear from any interested parties.

Applications close 19 September 2025.
