Proposed intersection improvements for Saulbrey Road and Great South Road

We're continuing work on proposed improvements to the Saulbrey Road and Great South Road intersection in Ngaaruawaahia, with a roundabout currently identified as the preferred option.

The project aims to improve safety and support future growth in the area.

We have been exploring ways to make the intersection safer for road users, while also improving traffic flow and preparing for increased demand as the area grows.

As part of the current design work, a raised safety platforms near the proposed new entrance to the Matariki Terrace is also being considered to help slow traffic and improve safety.

The project is still in the design phase, and no decisions have been made about construction at this stage.

Any future construction would depend on funding being approved, including support from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and future Council Long Term Plan decisions.

Some proposed design changes may affect how people access the road network locally. These currently include:

  • closure of Matariki Terrace at the intersection, with access proposed via new roundabout
  • closure of the current Ngaaruawaahia Golf Club driveway, with new access proposed via the roundabout
  • a proposed one-way entry into Matariki Terrace.

We're inviting the community to a drop-in session to view the latest design plans, ask questions and speak directly with the project team.
