After years of district-wide planning and design, our closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera network is complete and operational, helping to improve public safety and support Police investigations.
A significant portion of the project funding was secured through the Better Off Funding programme, a central government financial support package designed to help local authorities invest in community wellbeing and infrastructure.
Determining locations for the 15 cameras involved an extensive consultation process. Elected members, community representatives, iwi, and Police all contributed to identifying the most suitable sites. This collaborative approach helped ensure the cameras were positioned to maximise coverage of higher-risk areas, while maintaining privacy considerations for residents.
The network also incorporates number plate recognition technology, which means vehicles can be identified and tracked as they travel through the district. The system has already demonstrated its value in supporting Police with their enquiries and investigations.
To ensure strict compliance with privacy legislation, the CCTV network is managed through a centralised server, and access is restricted to a small number of authorised staff.
Waikato district’s CCTV network is an important investment in community safety and provides Police with an additional tool to help prevent, deter, and investigate crime.
As further funding becomes available, the network is expected to expand, with additional cameras installed across the district.
