With just months to go until Te Matatini o Ngaa Taniwha 2027, Waikato District Mayor Aksel Bech is encouraging residents, businesses, marae and community organisations to start preparing for what will be the largest event ever hosted in the Waikato District.
From 22 — 28 February 2027, thousands of performers, supporters, and visitors from across Aotearoa are expected to travel to the Waikato for Te Matatini o Ngaa Taniwha hosted by Te Whare Haka o Tainui and Waikato-Tainui.
Mayor Aksel said the event represents a significant economic, cultural, social and opportunity for the district.
"Te Matatini is one of the most significant cultural events in Aotearoa. It brings together the very best of kapa haka, celebrates te reo Maaori, and showcases the richness and diversity of our communities."
In 2025, Te Matatini brought $23m into New Plymouth’s local economy. Ngaaruawaahia is centrally located, and close to Hamilton and Auckland — the economic benefits could exceed those of the previous event.
"Importantly, this is an international event and Waikato District Council is proud to provide support alongside our partner agencies as we prepare to welcome visitors from across the country."
The week-long programme will begin with a poowhiri at Tuurangawaewae Marae before the competition moves to Hopuhopu Sports Park, where kapa haka groups from throughout Aotearoa will compete over five days.
Organisers expect visitor numbers in excess of 100,000 over the duration of the competition which will mean increased activity across roads, accommodation providers, local businesses, marae, and community facilities.
"Our message to residents and businesses is simple: be informed, be prepared and be excited,” said Mayor Aksel. “This event will bring increased activity across our district, but it also presents a unique opportunity to showcase the hospitality, generosity, and spirit that Waikato is known for."
Council is working closely with Waikato-Tainui, emergency services, transport providers and other partner organisations to ensure communities are well informed and prepared ahead of the event.
Over the coming months, residents can expect regular updates about transport planning, visitor information, community readiness initiatives, and opportunities to get involved.
"Hosting an event of this scale means we all have a part to play. Whether you're a local business, a community organisation, a marae, a volunteer, or a resident, there's an opportunity to contribute to making Te Matatini a memorable and successful experience."
Mayor Aksel said the event is also an opportunity to strengthen the district's reputation as a welcoming destination.
"This is our chance to share the stories, culture, and manaakitanga of our district with visitors. Together, we can help ensure everyone who comes here experiences the very best of Waikato."
