A piece of Ngaaruwaahia's history is set for a new chapter, with the former Plunket and Ladies' Rest rooms on the corner of Jesmond and Newcastle Streets now up for sale.
Waikato District Council are seeking proposals from potential buyers for the historic property at 31 Jesmond Street, with the aim of seeing the site redeveloped for commercial, retail, or community uses that will help revitalise the town centre.
In 1939, locals rallied behind a fundraising campaign to create a Centennial Memorial in the form of the Plunket and Ladies' Rest rooms.
Through the Queen’s Carnival, the community raised £880, approximately $112,615* in today’s currency, to fund the building, which was completed in 1940.
After serving the families of Ngaaruawaahia for generations the building has remained vacant since 2017.
"This building has a special place in Ngaaruawaahia's history. Its story began with a gift to the community and was brought to life through the determination and generosity of local people" says Newcastle-Ngaaruawaahia General Ward Councillor, Eugene Patterson.
"While the building's next chapter may look different, we'd love to see that community spirit continue, bringing life and activity back to this important site."
The sale is taking place after receiving feedback from the community during the 2025-2034 Long Term Plan consultation, supporting the sale of land surplus to council requirements.
