Waikato district residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste at a free drop-off event in Ngaaruawaahia on Saturday, 28 November 2026, from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
Funded through the Ministry for the Environment's Waste Minimisation Fund, the event provides a safe and easy way to dispose of items that can't go in household rubbish or recycling bins.
Accepted items include paint waste, solvents, oils, automotive waste, household chemicals, aerosols, batteries and pesticides. Residents should check the event details before booking, as accepted materials may vary.
The event aims to reduce health and environmental risks, prevent illegal dumping, and ensure hazardous waste is managed responsibly, with some materials able to be recycled.
The free service is available to Waikato district residents and ratepayers. Registration is essential, as places are limited and drive-up participants cannot be accepted. Registered attendees will receive location details before the event.
While the event is being held in Ngaaruawaahia, it is open to residents across the Waikato district. Similar events have previously been held in Huntly, Pookeno and Tuakau, with more planned in the future.
