Dog Control Policy and Bylaw Review 2027 - Early engagement
The Dog Control Policy sets out Council's approach to managing dogs within the district, while the Dog Control Bylaw contains the rules used to give effect to that policy.
Through this review, Council is considering a range of topics including dog ownership, dog exercise areas, the management of dogs in public places, working dog registration categories, and how current provisions apply to changing community and housing needs.
The review is also considering aspects of Council's wider dog control services, including community education programmes that promote dog safety and responsible dog ownership, and the Waikato Pound Pups rehoming programme. We want to understand how important these services are to the community and what factors Council should consider when making future decisions about service delivery.
Before any proposed changes are developed, Council wants to hear from the community. Early engagement provides an opportunity for residents, dog owners, mana whenua, community groups, and other stakeholders to share their experiences and help identify the issues that matter most.
Feedback received during this engagement phase will help inform future policy and bylaw options. Any proposed changes will be brought back to the community through a separate formal consultation process at a later date.
