Proposed Lease for Turangawaewae Waka Sports at Point Reserve, Ngaaruawaahia

Waikato District Council (Council) has received an application from Turangawaewae Waka Sports Incorporated (TWS) for an initial 2-year lease over an existing building and a small area of surrounding land at Point Reserve, Ngaaruawaahia. The lease would provide a clubroom for TWS's activities and support the continued growth of waka ama within the Waikato community.

TWS established in 2005 and provides opportunities for people of all ages to participate in waka ama and other water-based activities. TWS currently has more than 200 registered members and supports recreational, competitive, educational and community-focused programmes throughout the region.

The lease application includes the use of the existing building on the reserve and the placement of a storage container beside the facility to securely store club equipment. A concept design was prepared by TWS to show how the building and container could be visually integrated while recognising the cultural significance of Point Reserve.

Land and Building

The lease includes a Council owned building which is located on a Recreation Reserve classified under the Reserves Act 1977.  As part of Councils decision, it must consider whether the proposed activity provides a recreational benefit.
