SH1B Telephone Road will reopen next year

Waikato District Mayor Jacqui Church is delighted by the news Minister of Transport, Hon Simeon Brown announced today that a solution to open the closed State Highway 1B Telephone Road rail crossing has been found.

“Waikato District Council has been working closely with NZTA and KiwiRail on options and strongly advocating for re-opening the crossing.”

“My thanks and that of Council and the community goes to Minister Brown and local MP Tim Van der Molen for prioritising the funding for the crossing, the positive impact of this project is considerable for our community.”

The local community are adversely impacted by the crossing closure - so today’s announcement that a resolution has been found and construction will get underway in the new year is great news.

NZTA expects to have a contractor for the work on board before the end January 2025, with construction completed before mid-2025.
