Last week in Raglan we officially opened the new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant. This milestone follows consultation with local hapuu, iwi and community, and 18 months of construction. The upgraded plant now produces near drinking-quality treated wastewater, protects our moana (sea) and land (whenua), and adapts to the seasonal population changes of a much-loved holiday destination.
Maintaining and improving infrastructure remains a significant challenge for Council in an environment of rising costs and constrained funding. We continue to invest in water infrastructure, including upgrades to treatment systems to meet evolving environmental and regulatory standards. While this work comes at considerable cost it is essential to protect the long-term health and wellbeing of our communities and the environment.
Designed to serve Raglan’s growth through to 2070, it uses leading technology to safeguard the environment and support the community’s future. The blessing by tangata whenua at the opening was a proud and moving moment for everyone involved.
The list of candidates for Waikato District’s 2025 local elections has now been confirmed, with a strong mix of voices putting themselves forward to represent our communities. Most seats across Council and community boards will be contested, which means your vote really can help shape the future of our district when voting opens from 9 September. This year’s election also includes a binding poll on the future of Maaori wards in the district – a decision that will influence how communities are represented in years to come. Now is the time to see who’s standing, connect with candidates through community events, and think about what matters most to you before voting closes on 11 October.
During this time all Council services remain fully operational, and your elected members are continuing their work to represent you until the official results are confirmed on 18 October. You can still contact Council through all the usual channels, and Councillors remain available to hear your concerns, support our community, and carry out Council’s democratic functions as normal.
Ngaa mihi
Craig Hobbs, Chief Executive
