If you are planning on heading away this weekend, states of Local Emergency remain in place for Whangārei, Thames‑Coromandel, Hauraki, Bay of Plenty, and Tairāwhiti. There are multiple road closures, and around 7,000 homes are still without power. Rescues are ongoing in Bay of Plenty.
Although the heavy rain has passed, the ground is very wet and unstable. That means ongoing risks from landslides, fallen trees, flooding, road closures and travel disruptions for some days to come. A strong Wind Watch is in place for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato north of Hamilton and Bay of Plenty north of Tauranga from 12:00pm to 5:00pm Saturday 24 January.
