Raglan to host World Surf League Championships

As Raglan prepares to host the fourth stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour in May 2026, Whāingaroa General Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson shares her thoughts on the event.

Having an international event like this on our doorstep provides an opportunity for our community and for our rangatahi to see and meet top class athletes. Even if you’re not a surfer, to have international athletes of this calibre here is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The event is organised and delivered by the WSL, and they have been working with hapuu, elected members and local board riders’ clubs from the get go.

With the influx of visitors to areas that are precious to us, it’s how we as a local community own and influence the economic benefits that a large sporting event like this brings to Raglan and the wider visitor economy, at the same time as protecting Raglan’s coastal character and natural environment, our taiao.

Of course, it won’t be without its challenges, and elected members, Raglan Community Board and council staff, together with iwi and hapuu, are working together with the organisers to manage and local impacts like traffic, waste services, access and safety.

Whāingaroa Raglan, while known for its surf breaks, is so much more than the waves. I’d like to think that our strength of community and what binds us comes together for this major event, and we show them the manaakitanga and hospitality that makes Raglan special.

About WSL Championship Tour
The New Zealand Pro will take place at Manu Bay and will be the fourth stop on the 2026 Championship Tour, bringing the world’s best surfers to one of the most iconic left-hand surfing breaks in the world.

Council is not funding or running the event. Our role is to carry out its regulatory responsibilities and work alongside event organisers, partners, and the local community to manage impacts and support good outcomes for the district.

Central government is supporting the event through the Events Attraction Package. Council’s costs relate to its normal regulatory and coordination roles, focused on managing local impacts and community safety.
