National recognition for Hukanui Playground and Council mahi

We’ve been recognised nationally at the 2026 Recreation Aotearoa Parks Awards, with Hukanui Playground in Gordonton named as a finalist in the Playspace of the Year (Within $500,000) category.

While the project didn’t take home the final award, being selected as a national finalist is a significant achievement and recognition of the mahi, partnerships and community collaboration behind the project.

The awards celebrate excellence across parks, play and open spaces throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, recognising projects that strengthen communities, support wellbeing and create welcoming public spaces.

Hukanui Playground was acknowledged alongside outstanding projects from across the country for its strong community-led approach, inclusive design and local storytelling elements.

The playground officially opened in December 2025 and features a flying fox chosen by local tamariki, nature-inspired play elements and features that reflect the history and identity of Hukanui.

The project was delivered through close collaboration between the Gordonton community, Gordonton District Committee, Ngaati Wairere, Gordonton School, WEL Networks as funding partners, and Waikato District Council.

Waikato District Council Opens Spaces Services Manager Glyn Morgan  said the recognition reflects the strength of community partnerships across the district.

“This recognition highlights what can be achieved when communities, mana whenua and Council work together. Hukanui Playground has become a space the community can be proud of, and it’s fantastic to see that recognised nationally.”

The awards also recognised Waikato District Council’s Melissa Allen, who was named a National finalist for Parks Leader of the Year, recognising her contribution and leadership within the parks sector.

Although we didn’t bring home a trophy this year, having both a project and staff member recognised nationally reflects the quality of work happening across the organisation and the strong relationships Council continues to build with communities.
