The upgraded lighting at the Whatawhata Tennis Courts is now complete and ready for the community to enjoy.
The project has delivered new lighting, upgraded power connections and supporting infrastructure to improve how the courts can be used, particularly during evenings and winter months.
The renewal also includes future-proofing for a potential future connection to rugby field lighting nearby.
The project was delivered following ongoing engagement and collaboration with mana whenua, Ngaati Maahanga, with tikanga and cultural protocols observed throughout the project. A karakia was held before construction began, with a further blessing and celebration planned to mark the project completion.
Testing of the new lighting system has now been completed, with results exceeding the original design requirements.
Council contractor Stainless Design Business Development Manager Simon Carden said the upgraded lighting is a great outcome for the local community.
“Projects like this help support active communities and improve access to local recreational facilities. It’s fantastic to see the courts ready for use again with modern, high-quality lighting in place.”
Physical works began in March 2026 and included directional drilling; installation of new switchboards, wiring, new lighting poles and reinstatement works around the site.
Council thanks the community, stakeholders and neighbouring users for their patience and support while works were underway.
A blessing and celebration event was held on 19 May to mark the completion of the project.
