Head Start: Progress on Council Amalgamation

As we mark Matariki, it's an opportunity to pause, reflect and spend time with those around us. This year's theme, Herenga Waka, celebrates unity, inclusion and the value of bringing people together to share different perspectives.

That spirit reflects the approach we've taken with Head Start. Over the past few weeks, we've heard from hundreds of people across our district through more than 30 community meetings, online feedback, and discussions with neighbouring councils, iwi leaders, marae representatives and stakeholders. Those conversations have provided valuable insights, and it's clear there is a lot to consider in the proposal we will put forward to central government.

While views differ, several themes continue to emerge. Rates affordability, managing debt, including not being impacted by other councils' existing debt, and ensuring local communities continue to have a strong local voice are consistently being raised.

If you haven't been able to attend a community meeting, I encourage you to visit our Head Start webpage, where you'll find information, videos,  the options being explored, maps, answers to frequently asked questions, as well as the form to share your thoughts.

We have extended the feedback period until Tuesday 14 July, giving people the opportunity to use the Matariki weekend to reflect on the information, discuss it with whānau and friends, and then share your thoughts with us.

Once feedback closes, we'll carefully consider everything we've heard before deciding on Council's proposed approach on 5 August, ahead of submitting it to central government on 9 August.

While the final decision rests with central government, the strongest proposal we can put forward is one that genuinely reflects the views, priorities and aspirations of our communities. That's why every piece of feedback matters.
