Pookeono: Great South Road intersection update — remedial work confirmed

Since its construction in October 2024, Council has noted that some heavy transport vehicles have been overrunning the curb and channel work causing damage to it and the surrounding grass, and the roundabout itself.

We acknowledge the construction of the roundabout does not accommodate all heavy transport vehicles. Retrospective design to remediate and improve the roundabout is in place, and we are now looking at budgeting for this work to be completed. Upon confirmation of available funding this work is planned to begin in the coming summer 2026/27 construction season.

We know that this work will cause a disruption to traffic flows, and we will work closely with stakeholders to limit these disruptions as much as possible.

We also want to acknowledge and caution that, even after this work is completed, there will continue to be exceptional cases where the roundabout is overrun, an example being consented oversize vehicle movements through this intersection.

Council will provide further information about construction timing, traffic management and potential disruption as planning progresses.

For any reports of road damage and maintenance request:

The community and road users will be updated by Waikato District Council before work begins on our Roadworks and road closures page.
