Huntly historic rail station

Raahui Pookeka | Huntly Railway Station.

This project includes the relocation of the historic railway station building from Lake Puketerini to its new home at the upgraded station site. Once relocated, we will integrate the building into the platform and station site, enhancing the landscape and ensuring compliance. Additionally, we will design the refurbishment of public toilets within the building.

This relocation presents a unique opportunity to create a multi-use facility that will support the Te Huia service, potentially housing a ticket office and public toilet. It will also serve as the Waikato Coalfields display museum. The project not only revitalises the Huntly central business district but also contributes to the visual enhancement of the area and supports local tourism.

Project Update

April 2024 – Construction on the site recommenced 25 March 2024. Works completed since includes straightening of the damaged section as the building has sagged due to the weight of the canopy and sitting unevenly for an extended period of time, removal and replacement of damaged external cladding and timber framing, removal of roof structure and damaged roof trusses, and replacement of roof trusses.

The damaged section is scheduled to be shifted on 10 – 11 April initially being loaded on the truck, then next day lowered onto the permanent piles, joining to the undamaged section. Roof replacement work will then be completed, following with the original project scope which is expected to take two months.

Once complete the building will be handed over to the Huntly Museum for their internal fitout to convert the interior to their new hub. For more information on the museum https://museum.huntly.co.nz/the-new-museum/.
