Local businesses shape Raahui Pookeka/Huntly’s economic future

Business owners and entrepreneurs gathered in Raahui Pookeka/Huntly last night for an energising business workshop aimed at strengthening the local economy and shaping the town’s future.

Hosted by Genesis Energy at the Huntly Power Station, the face-to-face session was co-facilitated by the Takitini Economic Development Team and Spatial Planning Team at Waikato District Council. The kaupapa of the event was simple but powerful: to bring local business voices together and ensure the aspirations of Raahui Pookeka/Huntly businesses are heard, valued, and woven into future plans.

The workshop provided a unique opportunity for participants to meet the Council’s new Chief Executive, Craig Hobbs, and engage directly with Economic Development Advisors, peers, and Council staff.

Craig Hobbs said, “listening to the energy and ideas in the room was inspiring. It’s clear that this community is passionate about creating lasting opportunities for local people. Through Takitini, Council is committed to being a proactive partner —but it’s not just about Council. It’s about connecting communities to a wider network of support and agencies to drive better outcomes for this town and its people..”

The event was well-attended by a range of industries—from construction to retail and everything in between. Many spoke of the need for collaboration and tailored support from a range of agencies to help Raahui Pookeka/Huntly thrive, not just now, but in the decades ahead.

Attendees worked together in small groups to identify challenges, propose solutions, and share insights about the kinds of support they need most—from skills development and infrastructure investment to more core Council processes.

Emma Rankin, Economic Development Advisor, said, “this event is part of our Takitini approach—progress together. Local insight is crucial, and today’s feedback helps shape how we align Council’s work and develop future plans with the real needs of our business community at the heart of everything.”

Insights from the event will be collated to inform future initiatives and plans. Council staff also encouraged participants to stay connected and continue building the momentum sparked at the workshop.

Takitini is Waikato District Council’s dedicated economic development team, focused on partnering with local businesses, iwi, community groups, and investors to grow a resilient economy in the Waikato. The name Takitini reflects the kaupapa of progress through collective strength; “takitini” meaning “the many” in te reo Māori. The team provides support ranging from business networking and funding guidance to skills development and strategic planning.
