It has been a true honour to serve the Waikato district this triennium – a time of both significant challenge and meaningful progress. As we step into the election, it is timely to reflect on the progress we have achieved, and the plans now in place for our shared future.
This Council began its journey with a fresh team – a new Mayor, nine new councillors, and, for the first time, representation through Maaori wards. Together, we have led with purpose, and always with people at the heart of every decision.
Our recently adopted Long Term Plan sets the course for the next nine years, shaped in the toughest economic environment local government has faced in decades. This plan carefully prioritises our work programme on core services, avoids unnecessary or flashy projects, and is committed to financial responsibility.
This triennium has seen major steps forward in how we manage and deliver infrastructure across the district. From upgraded wastewater and stormwater systems to improved roads, new community spaces and critical resilience work following severe weather events, we have delivered real outcomes that strengthen our towns and communities. The creation of IAWAI Flowing Water, our new council-controlled organisation with Hamilton City Council, marks a significant milestone in local decision-making and delivery for vital water services.
We have also sharpened our focus on climate response and resilience, with strategies and investment that recognise the challenges ahead and commit to meaningful, long-term change. These decisions reflect our responsibility not just to the present, but to the generations who will call Waikato home in the future.
There is much to be proud of – not just for this triennium, but for the enduring values of collaboration and service that guide our work. As we look forward, I remain confident that together we can build a strong, sustainable Waikato district for all.
Ngaa mihi and kind regards
Mayor Jacqui
