Pookeno’s main street will be closed at night next week so that urgent repairs can be made to Great South Road.
Contractors will be carrying out asphalt repair works on various sections of the main street between McDonald Road and Church Street from 10pm to 5am on the nights of Sunday July 20 and Monday July 21.
The road repair will involve removing the sections of the existing surface and some of the subsurface materials and replacing it with new material.
The repairs will provide a more durable solution than the temporary filling of potholes along Great South Road that has been done recently.
Speed restrictions will remain in place for up to 48 hours post the repairs taking place.
Meanwhile, these sections of road are programmed for a permanent full asphalt resurfacing during this summer’s construction season.
Work on these sections of road has long been programmed.
It was originally included in the 2021–2031 Long Term Plan (LTP), with the intention to upgrade the main street in stages.
Council’s roading team requested the funding for the section between McDonald Road up to the new roundabout as a capital project and submitted it to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi for co-funding.
Unfortunately, this application was not successful, and Council did not receive capital funding support.
In response, the team has carried out interim patch repairs to address the most urgent issues.
Due to more deterioration of the road after the high amount of rain that has fallen during winter, Council is now prioritising this section as renewal works rather than a capital upgrade.
This has allowed this work next week to be brought forward under the asset renewals programme.
Next week’s structural repairs are a critical pre-renewal step to ensure the main street is safe and stable ahead of the full asphalt resurfacing work from McDonald Road to the new roundabout programmed for this summer’s construction season.
The detour, via McDonald Road, Gateway Park Drive and Hitchen Road will be signposted.
Tuesday night (22 July), from 10pm and 5am has been designated a contingency period should it be needed.
