We’ve planted more than 2,870 plants around the Horotiu stormwater pond to help improve water quality, and carried out desludging of the pond to remove built-up sediment and debris.
Stormwater ponds play an important role in our stormwater system. They capture and hold stormwater, slowing down the flow so sediment and pollutants can settle or breakdown naturally, which helps return cleaner water to our rivers, lakes, and streams.
Plants help to improve water quality by filtering pollutants (like zinc and copper) through their roots, support biodiversity, and slow down water flow to promote sediment settling.
The green plastic guards around each of the new plants are in place to protect them from puukeko. They're made from durable plastic and will be removed once the plants are well established and reused for future planting projects.
