Resource consents

If you want to undertake an activity on a property and the activity is not permitted by our District Plan, you will need to apply for resource consent. Resource consents are formal approvals from Council for projects that may impact the environment or community. The main types of resource consents include:

  • Land use consents (using or developing land)
  • Subdivision consents (subdividing  land)
  • Water permits (taking, using, damming, diverting  water or discharging water to waterbodies)
  • Discharge permits (discharging contaminants into water, soil or air)
  • Coastal permits (using or occupying coastal space).

Waikato District Council process land use and subdivision resource consent applications. Water, discharge and coastal permits are processed by the Waikato Regional Council.
