Local election candidates for Waikato district confirmed for 2025

The list of candidates for Waikato District’s 2025 local elections has now been confirmed and if you’ve been wondering who’s putting their hand up to represent your community, now’s the time to take a look.

Nominations officially closed at midday on 1 August and the final line-up includes a strong mix of voices putting themselves forward to represent their communities across the district.

This year, most seats across Council and community boards will be contested, giving voters the opportunity to help shape the future of their communities when voting opens from 9 September.

There are two councillor seats and one community board position that are uncontested, meaning those candidates will be elected without a vote.

The rest of the roles, including mayor, councillors, and community board members — will go to election as planned.

A final addition to the candidates list was made this morning, following confirmation from our Electoral Officer.

If you’re enrolled to vote in the Waikato District, you’ll receive your voting pack in the mail from 9 September with voting closing at 12pm on 11 October.

This year’s election also includes a binding poll on the future of Maaori wards in the district — a decision that will affect how communities are represented in future elections.

Now’s the time to explore who’s standing, get to know your candidates through community events on our website, and start thinking about what matters most to you.

You can see the list of candidates here.
