In May 2025, Hamilton City and Waikato District Council agreed to form a publicly owned council-controlled organisation (CCO) to deliver water services across Hamilton City and Waikato district.
The CCO, named IAWAI – Flowing Waters, will manage 90,700 water connections for households and businesses. On our behalf, it will invest around $3.3 billion on water infrastructure over the next decade.
The name represents river (awa) in the centre, and references flow (ia) and water (wai). It was developed in close collaboration with Waikato-Tainui.
