New seawall is nearing completion as part of the western wharf improvements

In late-August 2023, construction kicked off on the much-anticipated western walkway improvements. This project includes tidal stairs and a kayak ramp, as well as new seating areas, cultural artworks and planting.

The team completed some major milestones prior to Christmas, such as creating a new seawall, kayak ramp, tree pits and the concrete/timber foot path - things are really starting to take shape.

The project will be back up and running from Monday 12 February, until the end of April, to complete the:

  • Craning into place the tidal terraces
  • Cultural and historical signboard installation
  • Laser cut steel panels acknowledging the harbors marine life
  • Pa Kahawai sculpture at the entrance
  • Pedestrian raised table at the entrance and adjoining footpath
  • Asphalt pavement surfacing and line marking
  • Tree planting.

During these months there will be impacts to the area, with periods of lots of truck movements for the tidal terrace installation, periods of closure of the vehicle loop, and some parking will be impacted.

We are looking forward to celebrating the official opening of the area once it is completed, more details to follow on this event.
