Dog registration tags

When out in public, your dog should wear its registration tag clearly visible on its collar.

Lifetime tags

From 1 July 2026 Council replaces annual plastic tags with durable metal tags. These tags are designed to last your dog's lifetime.

When you register or renew your registration, Council will provide you with a lifetime tag.

This tag can be used on your dog’s collar and does not need to be replaced unless lost. You will still need to renew your dog’s registration online each year to keep it current.

What a lifetime tag looks like

Lifetime tags are lightweight metal discs. Your dog’s registration number will be printed on one side. The back is blank.

They come in 2 sizes:

  • small for mini breed dogs (25mm diameter)
  • large for all other dogs (30mm diameter)

Note: Council now supplies disc tags only. We no longer offer straps.

How to wear a lifetime tag

To keep your tag in good condition, attach it directly to the D-ring on your dog’s collar using the supplied split-ring. Remove any other dog-bling that could rub against the tag and wear it down.

Engraving your lifetime tag

The back of the tag is blank. You can choose to get it engraved at your own cost. Adding your dog’s name and your phone number can help if your dog gets lost.

Lost or broken tags

Replacements tags cost $6. To order a replacement tag, email info@waidc.govt.nz.

Remember to include:

  • your name and address
  • your dog’s name

Tip: Put ‘dog registration’ in the subject line of your email.
