Work is progressing well to enhance the flood protection in Port Waikato. The final touches are being made to the stormwater improvements, with several projects now complete. This infrastructure will help ensure the community is future-proofed, resilient and able to respond to heavy weather events.
Below is a breakdown of what was needed and what has been done.
Main Pump Station Upgrade
Expected Completion: 31/08/2025
What was needed?
Upgrading the existing stormwater pump station and outlet channel to improve capacity and stormwater resilience.
What's been done?
Vegetation has been cleared, and both the new and widened outlet channels are now complete. A new gravity pipeline and manholes near the main pump station have been installed, along with a new stormwater outlet. Civil works and planting along the main outlet drain have also been completed.
Holiday Park Stormwater Pumps
Expected Completion: 31/08/2025
What was needed?
Installing a new stormwater pump station to increase flood resilience for the Holiday Park area.
What's been done?
The stormwater discharge pipe from the Holiday Park to the new outlet at Maraetai Bay Road is now in place. Onsite, the installation of catchpits and stormwater pipes has been completed. Electrical and civil works to install the stormwater pumps are currently underway.
Ooraeroa Marae flood resilience works

What was needed?
Stormwater drainage improvements in the stream.
What's been done?
The streambed and banks have been formed, boulders placed, and new stormwater infrastructure installed. Topsoil, coconut matting, and fencing have been added to stabilise the streambanks.
Soil nails and erosion matting have been installed near the outlet. Stormwater tanks and strip drains have been placed around the Marae building, and the temporary access track has been removed.
Ooraeroa Marae planting

Final planting, hydroseeding and additional boulder placement.
Slip Remediation, Planting & Fencing – Complete
What was needed?Stabilise the slip area at Sunset Farm and daylight a stream for improved flood resilience.
What been done?Slip remediation work at Sunset Farm is now complete. The site has been stabilised, planted, and fully fenced, reducing the risk of erosion and improving long-term resilience for the surrounding land.
